Panels and Pads
How it works.
Honeycomb derives its structural performance from the geometry of its cells. The hexagonal cell pattern distributes compressive forces evenly across the panel face, allowing a relatively lightweight paper structure to carry significant loads. Strength is controlled through two primary variables: cell size and liner grade.
Smaller cell sizes produce a denser core with more paper per unit area — resulting in higher compressive strength. Larger cell sizes reduce density and compressive load capacity but increase the panel’s ability to deform and absorb energy, making them effective cushioning materials. Virgin kraft liners can be substituted for recycled kraft to increase compressive ratings at any given cell size.

Selecting the right cell size is the single most important design decision when specifying a honeycomb panel. The chart below shows the performance characteristics of each available cell size. Specific PSI ratings vary by liner grade.

Design considerations.
Select cell size based on required distributed load — do not overspecify . A 3/8" cell where a 3/4" cell would perform adequately adds cost without benefit.
Panel thickness is independent of cell size.
Width and length should be specified with your packaging line constraints in mind. Maximum width is 59"; maximum length is 144".
