Wedges

Honeycomb wedges are custom-cut tapered pieces used for blocking, bracing, and void fill in shipping containers, crates, and trailers. Their tapered profile lets them drive into irregular gaps, filling void space and immobilizing loads that would otherwise shift in transit.

How they work.

A wedge is placed in the gap between the product being shipped and a fixed surface — the container wall, floor, or adjacent product. As the wedge is driven into the gap, its tapered profile causes it to lock in place, filling the void and preventing the load from moving in the direction of the gap.

Honeycomb wedges resist compression in the direction of the applied force — the panel’s cell structure distributes the load across the wedge body, preventing collapse under normal shipping conditions. The taper geometry is designed so that the wedge tightens under vibration rather than working loose.

Design considerations.

  • Wedge geometry — taper angle, height, and width — should be matched to the gap being filled. Provide container and product dimensions to confirm the appropriate wedge profile.

  • For high-vibration environments, a more aggressive taper angle may be required to ensure the wedge remains locked throughout transit.

  • Wedges can be used individually or in stacks — multiple wedges driven in sequence to fill a larger void.

  • Cell size selection affects compressive performance. For heavy loads or rigid blocking, a smaller cell size and/or virgin kraft liner is recommended.

  • Honeycomb wedges are single-use. They are not designed for recovery and reuse in high-cycle returnable dunnage programs.

Applications

Common applications.
Representative use cases for wedges. Every application is custom-engineered — these are illustrative starting points, not standard SKUs.

Container Loading & Blocking

Void fill and load securing in ocean freight containers — prevents product movement during multi-modal transit.

Rolls and Coils

Load blocking where vibration and impact loads are significant. Wedges resist high-cycle fatigue in transit.

OTR Trailer Blocking

Load bracing for flatbed and dry van trailers — wedges secure palletized or loose loads against floor and walls.

Automotive Parts Shipping

Dunnage blocking for automotive stampings, castings, and sub-assemblies in stillages or purpose-built containers.

Crate Blocking & Bracing

Internal blocking inside wooden or steel crates for heavy equipment, machinery, and fabricated components.

Export Packaging

Lightweight void fill for export cartons and shipping containers where weight is a cost factor and ISPM-15 exemption is required.
