About Honeycomb
From an engineering perspective, Axxon’s honeycomb panels and pads are defined as a structural composite material consisting of a continuous hexagonal cell core sandwiched between two flat facing papers. The core is formed by bonding ribbons of paper together in an offset pattern and then expanding them to create the characteristic honeycomb structure. The pitch between the glue lines drives the finished cell size, and the width of the ribbon drives the finished panel height. Once the core is prepared, facing papers are bonded to the top and bottom surfaces of the expanded core using a water-based adhesive. Trim, scoring, and slicing operations are implemented to create a finished rigid, lightweight panel ready for its destined application.
The hexagonal shape of the core takes its lead straight from the natural world. The honeycomb structure used by bees is one of nature’s most efficient load-bearing structures. The hexagon shape encloses the largest possible area with the least amount of material. In a network, they distribute compressive forces evenly across all connecting walls which allows a lightweight structure to support incredible compressive forces.
In layman’s terms, we’ve taken inspiration from nature and married it with economical and environmentally friendly materials create a panel that has and excellent strength-to-weight ratio, is easily recyclable, and is highly modifiable to the dimensions of your project.
Products & Specifications
Everything Axxon produces is custom. We do not maintain a catalogue of standard sizes — every panel, corner, pad, pallet, and converted product is built to the customer's specified dimensions. This gives you the exact size you need for your application without compromise, and eliminates waste from trimming oversized stock.
Panel dimensions range from 2" strips to 59" wide panels, and from 6" to 144" in length. Thickness ranges from 0.5" to 5.75". All five cell sizes are available across the full dimension range.
Sustainability
Working With Axxon
Yes. Axxon's consultation-first approach is built around exactly this process. We work with customers through the design and specification stage — discussing your application, reviewing dimensions and load requirements, and can produce sample panels or prototype components for fit-and-function validation before you commit to a production order.
This is particularly valuable for new applications, complex geometries, or situations where the customer is transitioning from another packaging material and wants to validate honeycomb performance before full deployment. Contact us to start the conversation.
